This plant grows well at an altitude of 600-1,500 m above sea level and is often found in West Sumatra, Jambi, North Sumatra, Bengkulu, West Java, Central Java, East Java and Maluku. Plants can reach 15 m high, small and stiff leaves with red shoots. The bark is gray with a distinctive aroma and sweet taste, and is harvested (in the form of bark and twigs) after the plant is 10 years old with a stem circumference of up to one meter.
